Terra manufactures Sodium Nitrite in both solution and crystal form at its Billingham Site, according to systems registered to ISO 9002.

The process used is catalytic oxidation of Ammonia, whereby Ammonia is combusted in the presence of excess air to yield various oxides of Nitrogen. These oxides are absorbed into Sodium Hydroxide Solution to generate Sodium Nitrite Solution at strengths up to 40% w/w. This solution is crystallised to yield a grades of Sodium Nitrite greater than 98.5% w/w assay.

Sodium Nitrite is widely used in the chemical industry for the manufacture of 'colour' chemicals (traditional azo-dyes and pigments) and fine chemicals (pharmaceuticals intermediates, biocides and agrochemical intermediates). Due to the protecting and preserving characteristics of Sodium Nitrite, it is used as a preservative in a number of applications.
